Israel Withdraws from UN Human Rights Council, Citing Bias

butofthetimes

In a significant diplomatic move, Israel has announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), citing longstanding allegations of bias against the nation. This decision closely follows the United States' recent exit from the same body.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar articulated Israel's stance, asserting that the UNHRC has historically shielded human rights violators while disproportionately targeting Israel. He emphasized that the council has become a platform for antisemitism rather than a forum for genuine human rights advocacy. Sa'ar highlighted that Israel is uniquely subjected to a dedicated agenda item within the council, leading to over 100 condemnatory resolutions—surpassing the combined total against nations such as Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela.

The United States, a key ally of Israel, had earlier withdrawn from the UNHRC, with President Donald Trump signing an executive order that also terminated funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This move was justified by accusations of inherent bias within these organizations.

The UNHRC, established in 2006, serves as the principal UN entity responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally. Critics of the council argue that it has been co-opted by member states with questionable human rights records, leading to politicized actions that undermine its credibility.

Israel's withdrawal has elicited varied international reactions. Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, condemned the decision, interpreting it as a refusal by Israel to acknowledge accountability for alleged actions in the West Bank and Gaza. She expressed concerns that this move might exacerbate tensions and impede efforts toward peace and justice in the region.

This development underscores the escalating tensions between Israel and international human rights institutions, raising questions about the future efficacy and impartiality of global human rights governance.
