Global Food Supply Under Threat: Rising Costs, Shortages, and Future Risks

butofthetimes

In recent years, the global food supply has faced significant challenges, leading to increased prices and shortages in various regions. Factors such as supply chain disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021–2023 global energy crisis, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and climate-related events like floods and heatwaves have all contributed to these issues. By early 2022, food prices had already risen by 20% compared to the previous year, and the situation worsened with the onset of the Ukraine conflict, pushing the increase to 40% in March 2022. Although there was some relief by January 2023, with the increase reduced to 18%, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns that food price inflation will persist in many countries. The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2023 highlighted food supply crises as an ongoing global risk, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and climate change. While early 2024 saw a return to more moderate commodity market prices, experts remain cautious due to potential disruptions from events like the Israel-Hamas war and the return of El Niño, which could again affect supply chains.
